Presentation

The specialised Sports Training programme, with a very strong component of know-how added to in-depth study of scientific, technical, professional and methodological expertise, is aimed at allowing students to obtain high-level professional certification. The curricular structure of the master’s degree and the internship component, to be done in the second year, with well-known sporting bodies, is aimed at requesting Sports Coach Level II accreditation from the IPDJ. In the second year, students can also choose to do a scientific dissertation.

This course is recognised by the DGAE | Directorate General for School Administration for career progression for teaching staff.

Entry Requirements

In accordance with the Regulations on Study Cycles leading to a Master’s Degree at the Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo, the following may apply for the Master’s Degree Course in Sports Training:

Holders of a bachelor’s degree or its legal equivalent in the academic area of Sports Science or in scientiﬁc areas linked with sports.
Holders of a foreign higher education degree granted following a first study cycle organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State that is a signatory to this process in the academic area of Sports Science or in scientific areas linked to sports.
Holders of a foreign higher education degree recognised by the IPVC Scientific and Technical Council as meeting the aims of the bachelor’s degree in the academic area in question or in scientific areas linked to sports.
Holders of academic, scientific or professional qualifications that are recognised as attesting to their ability to take on this study cycle by the IPVC Scientific and Technical Council.

Goals

Aims

To develop and consolidate expertise and scientific skills in the area of Sports Training so that these can be applied autonomously and originally in the context of the profession of sports coach.

Graduate profile

Taking part in the recruitment of athletes for the sport in question and monitoring their training activities.
Deciding how to plan training activities and competitions.
Leading the athletes in the training sessions and competitions, assuring the use of teaching skills: explaining, demonstrating, observing and correcting.
Assessing the athletes’ training/competitions, analysing their attitudes, behaviour and the results achieved and assuring their development.
Organising and guiding the athletes in preparation for and participation in competitions, assuring safety conditions and the ethical values involved in playing sports.
Specialising in laying the groundwork for research and development in the area of sports training.

Professional outcomes

Sports Coach (with recognition leading to a Sports Coach Certificate (CTD) level II) in a training school, club, association or federation.
Academic progression and consequent impact in a pedagogical, clinical and/or sports context.
