The Master’s Degree in Logistics comes as a result of the observation of a shortage of courses in this training area, but also because it is a scientific area that is now becoming vital for the competitiveness of organisations in general in the current economic context. By definition, logistics is the management of the flow of goods, information and other resources, including energy and people, from a point of origin to a point of consumption, and involves the integration of information, transport, stock management, storage, order processing, handling materials and packaging. This is the management area responsible for the supply of the resources, equipment and information necessary for the operation of any organisation. The aim of this study cycle is to teach scientifically advanced theory and practical knowledge, which will enable the graduates to provide an exacting performance of the duties associated with logistics.

Entry Requirements

The following may apply for the study cycle leading to a Master’s Degree:

Holders of a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
Holders of a foreign higher education degree granted following a first study cycle organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State that is a signatory to this process.
Holders of a foreign higher education degree recognised by the Scientific and Technical Committee for the course as meeting the aims of the bachelor’s degree.
Holders of academic, scientific or professional qualifications that are recognised by the Scientific and Technical Committee for the course.

The Master’s Degree in Logistics is aimed at participants who wish to extend their basic training or learn general management skills, providing them with technical and scientifically advanced expertise in the area of logistics, through qualifications that will enable the graduates to provide the most exacting professional performances, in different companies and institutions (public and private, for profit or not).

Target Audience: Managers, engineers and professionals in technological areas

Goals

Aims

The Master’s Degree in Logistics is aimed at giving participants a solid background in the management and industrial organisation area, as well as guaranteeing that they acquire skills in the logistics area.

There are also professional specialisations, in line with the suggestions for this type of polytechnic training, in accordance with the profile and needs (personal and/or professional) of the potential students: The main aims are to:

Train students to manage flows of materials and information and production and logistical processes.
Develop management skills in the different organisational areas – industry versus services – using integrated management methods, techniques and instruments in the analysis and resolution of problems in organisations.
Provide students with management skills in distribution and logistics processes, particularly transport management, warehouse management and production planning.
Develop business strategy skills and leadership skills in innovation and in change.

Learning Outcomes

Providing the students with skills in the management of distribution and logistics processes, transport, warehouse management and production planning, stock management, managing the supply chain of raw materials or finished products in the company.
Raising the awareness of students on the identification of the needs of the markets they operate in.
Developing management skills in the different areas – industry versus services.
Training students in production management in an industrial context, particularly in terms of operational strategy and competitiveness, both for products and for processes.
Developing skills to understand the different business models and the most current strategic options, highlighting the role of leadership and of organisational change.
Understanding the importance of Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the success of organisational strategies.
Providing the students with skills in citizenship and self-learning and instilling them with an entrepreneurial and flexible spirit.

Graduate profile

The Master’s Degree in Logistics is designed to convey skills that enable graduates to:

Plan and manage material and information flows as well as productive and logistical processes.
Use integrated management methods, techniques and instruments in the analysis and resolution of problems in the logistics area in organisations.
Decide, communicate, understand and assess complex situations.
Promote and develop an organisational climate and interpersonal relationships capable of leading to best practices in motivation and leadership of individuals and work teams.
Contribute to a competitive performance in the management of production systems for goods and services.
Promote a general attitude of attaching importance to the capacity for initiative and individual dynamics, leading to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Professional outcomes

The Master’s Degree in Logistics offers a wide range of career prospects, in circumstances similar to those provided by benchmark university education institutions in Europe, of particular note being:

Specialised senior management positions in logistics in a wide variety of public and private institutions, of any size.
Independent consultants or senior management positions in consultancy companies.
Teaching staff for the different teaching levels, particularly higher education.
Researchers.

Projects

Sanitop360^{° Project}– Integration of information flows and forecasting models for inbound and outbound volumes – funded by the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation, supported by the European Commission. FEDER, Project – 45549 – Sanitop – MATERIAL SANITARIO LDA, under 06/SI/2019 – SI QPME (Incentive System for the Qualification and Internationalisation of SMEs) (Funding: €26,000) May 2021 to May 2022.

Alto Minho 4.0 project – The aim of this project is to boost the competitiveness of 10 companies in the Alto Minho region by promoting the adoption of Industry 4.0 tools in various areas: Strategy & Management Control; Business Digitalisation; Distribution & Logistics; Optimisation & Quality and Performance Assessment. The action plan is tailored to the needs of companies, enabling them to access digitalisation services and solutions for their business in a competitive and sustainable way. As part of this project, a Logistics and Distribution Study will also be developed.

Project funded by PORTUGAL 2020 / Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation. Ref: POCI-02-0853-FEDER-041192.

Research projects

In the 2019/2020 academic year, Tiago Duarte Silva Vieira developed his dissertation for his Master’s Degree in Logistics with the aid of EU funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation (POCI), which began on 1 July 2020. This research was produced through a research grant, ref: BI1_ALTOMINHO4.0_2020, under the scope of a Logistics and Distribution Study, which was awarded to IPVC by CEVAL under the scope of PP4 of the Alto Minho 4.0 Project, reference number POCI-02-0853-FEDER-041192. The topic of the dissertation was: “Characterisation and analysis of logistics performance: Alto Minho Region Case Study”.

In the 2021/2022 academic year, Cristiana Arieira developed her dissertation in here Master’s Degree in Logistics with the aid of EU funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation, supported by the ERDF, Project – 45549 – Sanitop – MATERIAL SANITARIO LDA, under 06/SI/2019 – SI QPME (Incentive System for the Qualification and Internationalisation of SMEs) The topic of the internship report is: “Analysis of the Packaging Standardisation Process at Sanitop and Improving the Packaging Process”.
