The sustainable development models and the need to address environmental issues justify the training of professionals capable of analysing the complex relationships between the natural and human components of organisations and territories. These professionals are equipped with technical skills for environmental management, including planning, design and operation of environmental technologies, aimed at safeguarding the quality of the environment and life.

In this context, the Higher Professional Technical Course in Environmental Quality and Management is designed to educate professionals who can play an active role in implementing models, tools and evaluation processes. These professionals will be equipped to plan and manage the environment across various entities, activities and regions, with an emphasis on enhancing eco-efficiency, elevating environmental standards and fostering economic growth in both organisations and broader areas.

This course also aims to contribute to the following professional qualifications, as it provides the necessary vocational training required for working as: i) internal environmental auditors ISO 14001; ii) verifiers of the safety management system of higher risk establishments (Ordinance No. 966/2007, of 22 August); iii) environmental verifiers, under Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 25 November 2009; iv) CELE verifiers / RCLE-EU auditor, under Regulation (EU) No. 600/2012 of the Commission, of 21 June 2012, related to the verification of greenhouse gas emission reports. Access conditions

Who can apply:

Candidates with a secondary education qualification or a legally equivalent qualification
Holders of a Technological Specialisation Diploma or a Higher Professional Technical Diploma
Holders of a higher education degree who wish to seek professional requalification

Candidates over the age of 23 who have passed the exams designed to assess their capacity for higher education attendance can also apply.

National Applicants or equivalent

International applicants (applicants who do not hold Portuguese citizenship, are not citizens of a EU member state and are not family members of Portuguese or citizens of a EU member state, have not lived in Portugal continuously for more than two years as of 1 January of the application year, are not beneficiaries of equal rights and duties status granted under an international treaty as of 1 January of the application year and who are not applying for higher education admission through special admissions and special entry routes).

All foreign applicants must request the equivalence of their secondary education qualifications from their home country from a Portuguese secondary school. The equivalence of your certificate to Portuguese secondary education is a mandatory requirement for the application.

Goals

Aims

The Higher Professional Technical Course in Environmental Quality and Management (GQA) aims to educate professionals in overseeing and directing environmental monitoring, assessment and management initiatives across various processes, activities and locations, all while prioritising environmental integrity and eco-efficiency within organisations and regions.

Graduate Profile

Specifically, the objective is to provide technical staff with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to:

Carry out studies to characterise and assess surface, groundwater and wastewater conditions; evaluate air purity and acoustic surroundings; and analyse soil and sediment composition.
Carry out studies to characterise and analyse ecological and territorial systems as a basis for planning, land management, restoration of degraded areas and implementation of sustainable production systems.
Develop and implement environmental monitoring programmes, indicator systems and information and decision support systems in EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment), SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment) and EMS (Environmental Management Systems) processes, environmental diagnostics, Environmental and Sustainability Reports.
Develop environmental management programmes, environmental procedures and compliance assessments within the framework of the implementation and certification of environmental management systems, in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard and the EMAS Regulation.
Coordinate and carry out internal environmental management system audits and ensure compliance with environmental management plans for various projects.
Manage and implement operations linked to water supply treatment systems, wastewater treatment systems, gaseous discharge treatment and solid waste management.
Implement plans and projects for environmental recovery of degraded areas.
Promote and support the implementation of actions within the scope of Local Agenda 21 processes.
Develop and implement Safety Management and Major Accident Prevention System (SGSPAG) procedures.

Develop waste management plans, water management plans and energy management plans.

The CTeSP in Environmental and Quality Management is designed to provide the necessary skills for the following career opportunities:

Organisations managing water treatment and supply systems, sanitation and wastewater treatment and solid waste treatment;
Public and private organisations managing protected areas and other areas of high environmental value/interest (parks, protected landscapes, etc.);
Environmental consultancy service companies;
Municipalities and other regional and local administration bodies;
Territorial planning and management organisations.

Graduates of the CTeSP in Environmental Quality and Management are eligible to pursue the following bachelor’s degree courses at the ESA-IPVC without an entrance exam:
