Notable advances have been made in the field of geoinformatics and there has also been an increase in the type and number of applications, as well as growing employability in geodesy, cartography, topography, global positioning systems, photogrammetry, remote sensing and geographic information technologies.

These tools from the geoinformatics/geomatics field are applied to the promotion and improvement of the sustainable use of land, particularly in the management of natural resources (primary/biomass/forestry production, energy, geology, biodiversity, water and soils).
