Presentation
The Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering and Land Use Planning should include:
- The study and application of Earth and Life Sciences and human components and dynamics in the understanding of the complexity of the biophysical and the social (socio-environmental systems) in relation to the study of the characterisation and management of natural resources(water, geological and soil) (integrated management of hydrographic basins, geological resources and soil conservation).
- The political, institutional and legal frameworks that are the basis for the development models, systems and land and environmental management instruments, as well as the national and regional development models.
- The technology of the land observation systemsassociated with the implementation of geographic information systems and spatial data infrastructure (SDI) is associated with modelling and support systems for technical and political decision-making.
- The knowledge, practices and instruments required for environmental infrastructure and technology and waste and effluent management projects, as well as in energy production and management in relation to the implementation of environmental auditing and management systems.
- Skills in research and management methods in innovation and development of personal attitudes are transversal to the entire course.
At the same time, the aim is to create skills in research methods and to develop personal attitudes, particularly in the management of innovation, communication, negotiation and entrepreneurship, transversal to the entire course.
This course takes the requirements of professional associations into account, in association with the training providing and the institution’s in-house scientific and cultural project, with the aim of reinforcing current and potential career prospects in areas of increased employability and contributing to local/regional development for coordination between Research/Teaching, Administration and Companies.
The candidates accepted without a first cycle in engineering cannot be admitted to the Engineers’ Association or use the professional title of engineer.

Goals
Aims
- The Master’s Degree Course in Environmental Engineering and Land Use Planning is aimed at producing Masters with an open and comprehensive technical/technological profile.
- This includes and combines basic skills, and professional, personal and collective skills in the analysis, proposal and innovation of concepts, processes, services and products.
- In the areas of natural resource management, in environmental management systems and technology, as well as in the use of geographic information in the planning of environmental systems and in land planning.
This course takes the requirements of professional associations into account, in association with the training providing and the institution’s in-house scientific and cultural project, with the aim of reinforcing current and potential career prospects in areas of increased employability and contributing to local/regional development for coordination between Research/Teaching, Administration and Companies.
Graduate profile
The main aim of the Master’s Degree programme in Environmental Engineering and Land Use Planning is to integrate the study and application of natural and human sciences into understanding the relationships between knowledge of the biophysical sphere and the social, political and legal framework, which are the bases for environmental management models and instruments.
The ability to represent, study, model, arrange and organise environmental and land planning systems for implementing environmental management systems and land management systems comes as a result of teaching skills for:
- Characterisation, assessment and management of environmental systems in their biophysical and human components.
- Planning, management and requalification of water resources and their hydrographic basins, including sensitive areas such as wetlands and coastal zones.
- Analysis and design of models and tools for planning and managing natural resources, as well as environmental protection areas.
- Assessment of the changing nature of development models and taking part in land planning process in rural, urban and peri-urban areas in sector and environmental planning.
- Experimenting with technologies and methods for geographic representation, spatial analysis and editing in the area of training and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in digital governance and business innovation projects.
- Design and development of processes and experiments and validation of environmental models.
- Implementation of measures aimed at integrated prevention and control of pollution, particularly best available technologies.
- Implementation and certification of environmental management systems.
- Analysis, development and active participation in research, innovation, technology transfer and entrepreneurship projects.
- Holding environmental audits, given that the course contributes to compliance with the necessary requirements for APCER – Portuguese Certification Association – certification as an “Internal Environmental Auditor”.
Professional outcomes
At the end, the graduates will be capable of generating new models, instruments and individual, institutional and territorial empowerment instruments for smart, inclusive and sustainable development. With this engineering profile, the career prospects for Masters in Environmental Engineering and Land Use Planning include a broad range of activities in the public sector, as well as in the private sector, associations and businesses:
- Central, regional and local administration services and associations under public or private law.
- Regional, local and thematic development.
- Nature conservation services and management of the National Network of Protected Areas.
- Fundamental Nature Conservation Network.
- Institutions linked to civil defence and the management of natural resources and risks.
- Companies in the area of consultancy and preparing planning and development projects.
- Building and public works companies with environmental management responsibilities.
- Water supply, wastewater treatment and solid waste management companies.
- Map-making, database organisation and management and geographic information companies.
- Public institutions, companies and associations that renovate and promote natural and built heritage.
- Institutions operating in the area of education and environmental awareness or promotors of basic, secondary and higher education and training.
