Início / Study / (Português) Pós-Graduações / Mathematical Connections and the STEAM Approach in Basic Education
Presentation
The Postgraduate Course in Mathematical Connections and the STEAM Approach in Basic Education is aimed at bringing teachers at different teaching levels into contact with STEAM education in maths classes and specialising in the use of this approach. It is an approach advocated by several scientific and governmental institutions as well as researchers all over the world as being an effective tool to help teachers to bring the demands of the 21st century into their classrooms.
The aim is for them to get to know active teaching and learning methodologies through hands-on approaches and a maker culture, where the focus is on the strength of the mathematical connections at any level of education, establishing relationships between the complexity of the transformations and challenges of contemporary society and the rapid development of technology. It is therefore vital that this social and technological scenario is reflected in the classroom, allowing for the development of an integrated vision of maths.
To do this, it is fundamental and indeed urgent to take a closer look at the training and qualification of teachers so that they can contribute effectively to the mathematical literacy of their students and to their social and professional integration. Added to this argument is the fact that there is no course of this kind in the national panorama at the moment, which goes against international trends. It is believed that the absence of similar national courses could be explained by the fact that STEM/STEAM education is a relatively recent trend in the national and international panorama, so this training is still innovative in nature.

Entry Requirements
Holders of bachelor’s degree or equivalent course or master’s degree or equivalent course, holders of professional teaching qualifications for primary school (first cycle), or Mathematics and Nature Sciences in lower middle school (second cycle) or Mathematics in upper middle school (third cycle).
This course is aimed directly at the teaching practices of maths teachers at any level of basic education.
However, it is also aimed at teachers who wish to coordinate or give advice on curricular projects and activities of an interdisciplinary nature. It could well be an asset to all professionals who are interested in working at Ciência Viva Centres, Holiday Camps, Science Laboratories, etc.

Goals
Aims
The aim of the Postgraduate Course in Mathematical Connections and the STEAM Approach in Basic Education is to provide the students with the knowledge they need to organise their teaching practices with a view to the success of their pupils in maths, from a national and international perspective, working individually and in association with other teachers, guided by government recommendations, where mathematical connections and the STEAM approach are the organisational and integrating axes.
Graduate profile
It is therefore expected that the student will be capable of:
- Developing abilities that will allow them to reflexively implement and analyse research papers, particularly in terms of suitability, accuracy and ethics.
- Putting the knowledge acquired to use from a perspective of constant updating through reading and divulging documents of a scientific and pedagogic nature.
- Differentiating concepts such as: connections, interdisciplinarity, STEM/STEAM approach, Maker movement.
- Recognising the importance of connections when learning maths.
- Promoting contextualised and integrated learning, establishing connections: inside maths and between maths and other areas and daily life.
- Identifying which types of mathematical connections are most suitable for use in accordance with the aims, teaching level and subject area.
- Identifying and applying teaching and learning strategies through tasks inside and outside the classroom that promote an environment that is suited to active learning in its intellectual, cooperative and physical aspects.
- Integrating the STEAM approach into problem solving and project development.
- Integrating the skills learnt during the course from a curricular flexibility point of view.
- Using the expertise and tools necessary for developing tasks/projects in light of mathematical connections.
- After completing the course, organising stimulating projects in different subject areas from an integrating perspective, through maths.
