The Master’s Degree in Art Education is a professional study cycle organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Declaration.
The purpose of this Master’s degree course is to improve, broaden and research the technical and professional skills required for an integrated art education, in order to foster innovative and higher quality professional practice by addressing specific themes on the epistemological foundations and historical and cultural conditions of artistic output and aesthetic education, in its various settings and forms.
This Master’s Degree is recognised for the purposes of progression in a teaching career under the terms of Article 54 of the ECD.

This course is recognised by the DGAE | Directorate General for School Administration for progression in a teaching career.

Graduate profile
The course is aimed at holders of a degree or academic equivalent, coming from Early Childhood and Primary School Education Courses, DESES, Visual and Technological Education and Music Courses and Higher Music and Fine Arts Courses and related areas.

Partnerships and internships
– AO Norte. Student involvement in the Foto Memória and Cine Poesia projects and International Cinema Conferences;
– Krisálida Association. Student involvement in the MALUGA Festival;
– International Conference of the Arts. Involvement of students, in conjunction with the Master’s Degree Course in Art Education, in promoting and organising the event;
– University of Cabo Verde. Promoting the Master’s programme in Art Education. Organising art activities, workshops, exhibitions and conferences;
– Art Experiences. Annual intra and interinstitutional project.
Projects
– International Cinema Conference. Organised by the Norte Audiovisual Production and Animation Association, in association with the School of Education (ESE), Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo. Students from the Master’s Degree Course in Art Education attend and help organise masterclasses, workshops and conferences. The Viana Cinema Conferences are held at the ESEVC and provide a space for reflection, sharing experiences and publicising projects related to two central themes of the cinema – “cinema and school” and “cinema: art, science and culture”.
– Artistic Moments in the Paediatric Wing at Hospital de Santa Luzia, USLAM. Organisation of art activities in the Paediatrics Wing of ULSAM, to provide art and performance experiences for the patients.
– ‘Art Experiences’ Project. This project is held annually at the School of Education (ESE), Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo, to mark World Children’s Day. Students from the Art Education Master’s Degree programme, as well as students from other courses, provide a series of art activities for primary school pupils in Viana do Castelo Municipality. The aim is to raise awareness among the academic community and the community in general as to the importance of the role of the arts in the all-round education of the individual, the role of teamwork in consolidating the knowledge acquired during their training through the practical application of educational activities and to provide the children who visit ESEVC every year with innovative art experiences.
– International Arts Encounter. This project is run annually at the School of Education (ESE), Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo, and was held for the 15th time in 2020. It offers a space for dialogue between students and professionals in the arts from different continents, where everything being done annually in different contexts is disseminated and shared. This helps strengthen human and professional relationships, involvement in systematic international projects, group exhibitions and the creation of online art galleries. It helps raise awareness among students on the Master’s Degree Course in Art Education of different techniques and strategies for promoting artistic and cultural activities and involves them in the organisation of various events.
– Diálogos com a Arte Journal. Annual publication of a journal with articles arising from the scientific output of national and international researchers, as well as projects done by students and teachers on the Master’s programme in Art Education through intra-institutional cooperation at ESE-IPVC.
– Rural 3.0: Service Learning for Rural Development. This came about due to the existence of partnerships with other foreign institutions and collaborative actions inside and outside the Institution: it contains agreements and protocols with similar European institutions that have been running for several years and increasing, as is the case with the Rural 3.0 project. LAG5 (Croatia), LAG Ammersee (Germany), Kaunas district LAG (Lithuania), Galsinma (Spain), Stichting Schutsluis Alblasserdam (The Netherlands), Plenum (Austria) and LAG L’Altra Romagna (Italy).
