Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing seeks to respond to various challenges, namely the provision of highly qualified and differentiated care, centred on the person, the family, the group and the community, with a view to promoting and protecting mental health, the prevention of mental disorders and the treatment, psychosocial rehabilitation and social reintegration of the person.
The creation of the Master’s in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing is based on the most recent theoretical references in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, meeting the criteria defined for the training of 2nd cycle students, as well as the training requirements for the specialised level defined by the Order of Nurses and it will enable us to contribute to the training of professionals who constitute a critical mass for the implementation of mental health policies in the region and to participate with other health professionals in policies for the organisation of mental health care and in the design, implementation and evaluation of health projects aimed at the well-being and quality of life related to the mental health of populations.

Access conditions
Health professionals with specific training in nursing who meet the conditions set out in Article 17 of Decree-Law 74/2006 of 24 March, republished by Decree-Law 65/2018, 16 August, may apply:
- Holders of a bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent
- Holders of a foreign higher academic degree awarded following a 1st cycle of studies organised in accordance with the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process
- Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognised as meeting the objectives of a bachelor’s degree by the statutorily competent scientific body of the higher education establishment to which they wish to be admitted.
- Holders of an academic, scientific/professional curriculum that is recognised as attesting to their ability to complete this degree by the statutorily competent scientific body of the higher education establishment to which they wish to be admitted.

Goals
- To develop knowledge and skills, theoretical-practical and research knowledge in order to promote excellence in specialised practice in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, showing high levels of clinical judgement and decision-making, taking into account human responses to life processes and health and disease problems throughout the life cycle, in the different contexts of intervention; and
- Develop the scientific, technical, relational, ethical and legal competences needed to provide mental health and psychiatric nursing care, taking into account human responses to life processes and health problems throughout the life cycle in different intervention contexts.
Continuing Studies
Observations: The Cycle of Studies does not have different branches, it has a general pathway with a different finalisation depending on the optional area chosen: Option I-Final Internship with Report (Compulsory for obtaining the title of Specialist by the Order of Nurses), Option II-Project Work or Option III-Scientific Dissertation.
