Presentation
Light and heavy transport vehicles are becoming more intricate due to advances in mechanical design and digital/computer/mechatronic technologies. This complexity exists in internal combustion vehicles, hybrid and electric vehicles and their maintenance and repair increasingly require highly specialised/qualified staff. In addition, there are currently several companies in the Alto Minho region that manufacture components for the automotive industry and have chosen to operate in Viana do Castelo, leading to a greater need for specialised human resources. Consequently, this training will allow students to develop skills in this area in order to address this shortage.
The Higher Professional Technician in Car Mechanic can, independently or as part of a team, handle a wide range of tasks, including planning, overseeing and carrying out vehicle diagnostics, repairs and maintenance in both industrial and commercial settings. Furthermore, their in-depth knowledge in this area will enable them to work in industries specialising in Automotive Mechanics.

Goals
To train professionals specialised in Car Mechanic with the following skills:
- To carry out specialised work in automotive technology and management;
- To supervise and manage maintenance work, diagnostics, fault detection and repairs for both light and heavy vehicles;
- To plan and monitor third-party performance in the application of advanced methodologies, techniques and interventions for maintenance, repair, rectification, preparation and transformation of engine systems, vehicles and related equipment, ensuring their quality;
- To manage the application of environmental safety and occupational health and safety standards to ensure compliance at each workstation;
- To lead teams that produce mechanical, electrical, electronic and automotive control diagrams and designs, using tools such as computer-aided design (CAD);
- To plan and monitor third-party performance in manufacturing technological processes, especially in machining and welding operations, on the engine, chassis and bodywork of vehicles.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to conceptualise, execute, supervise and manage operations in industrial processes that provide services in the field of mechanical and automotive technology. They will oversee diagnostics, fault detection and repairs of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems in light and heavy vehicles. Their aim is to maximise the productivity of car maintenance and repair workshops, complying with environmental safety and occupational health and safety standards.
Professional outcomes
Graduates will generally be able to work in the automotive industry, in places such as:
- Mechanical workshops, dealerships, importers of equipment for the automotive industry.
- Public and private transport companies.
- Companies that design and manufacture equipment and systems for cars and motorbikes and industrial and agricultural equipment.
- Vehicle inspection, approval and legislation companies and organisations.
- Automotive consultancy firms.
- Training centres for motor vehicles.
Continuing Studies
Graduates of the CTeSP in Automotive Mechanics are eligible to pursue the following bachelor’s degree courses at the ESTG-IPVC, as they have acquired the knowledge and skills required for further studies:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
The Automotive Mechanics course (level 5) shares similarities/complementarities with Mechanical Engineering at ESTG – IPVC and will allow successful candidates to gain accreditation of about 50 ECTS on the Bachelor’s Degree Course in Mechanical Engineering.
