Presentation
The Master’s Degree in Informatics Engineering is a complement to the training provided in the area of Information Systems and Technology at IPVC which, in the first cycle, is made up of courses in Computer Engineering, Computer Graphics and Multimedia Engineering and the new course in Network and Computer Systems Engineering. The subsequent cycle offers the Master’s Degree in Management of Information Systems and Technology for graduates from information systems, business, and social science backgrounds, as well as this new Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering.
The master’s degree in Informatics Engineering is based on the study carried out by ANETIE on the main needs and gaps in the training of Computer Engineers, as well as on the European guidelines identified in the document, “Towards a European software strategy – skills and lifelong learning”, working group 6, of 2009, Industry input to the European Commission. The “ACM/IEEE Computer Science Curricula 2013” and the “Curriculum Guidelines for Graduate Degree Programmes in Software Engineering” (GSwE2009) were also used.
Therefore, the master’s degree in Informatics Engineering will certainly contribute to boosting the development of the business fabric in this region, through these specialised human resources and for the improvement of the information systems available to the existing organisations in this geographic area.

Goals
Aims
Information Systems and Technologies (IST) represent important support infrastructure for modern society and are growth areas with high employability.
In the current service society, the need for qualified specialists to work in the areas of analysis, design, construction, testing and validation of usable, reliable and secure computer solutions, as well as to plan, operate and monitor the IT infrastructure supporting them, the aim of the Master’s Degree in Informatics Engineeringis to complement the training acquired during the first study cycle in Informatics Engineering or its equivalent, producing specialists in these areas.
The fact that companies in Alto Minho are small and that there are few companies providing support for the development, maintenance or management of IST infrastructure in the region is grounds for a specialised postgraduate training profile, but with various skills in Informatics Engineering. Therefore, after the first year where course units in a number of specialisation areas are taught, it is the student who, in the second year, chooses the area of specialisation they want to focus on for their master’s project.
