Nowadays, families are faced with significant changes in their structure, organisation and functional dynamics, which have a lasting effect on their health processes.
In this context, the Master’s Degree Course in Community Nursing in the Family Health Nursing Area is a training response in the nursing area due to the new demands faced by families, an area that deserves to be served by highly qualified professionals.
Through benchmark training, leading to a Master’s Degree in Community Nursing in the Family Health Nursing area, according to the choices made by the students, the conditions for the attribution of the Professional Title of Specialist Nurse in the area by the Portuguese Nursing Association are simultaneously assured. It thus contributes to providing primary healthcare, particularly in Family Health Units, with specialised resources in the area of family nursing, in accordance with the recommendations of point 1(e) of Order No. 200/2016, of 7 January.
The consortium made up of the IPVC School of Health (ESS), the ESS at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro and the ESS at Bragança Polytechnic Institute thus undertakes to train their nurses for excellence in healthcare and excellence in the nursing care provided to families, particularly in the North Region.

Aims
- To provide and manage specialised healthcare for families, as a care unit, and to each one of their members throughout their lives, at different levels of prevention, life circumstances and transition processes, from an inclusive and multidisciplinary point of view.
- To act in situations of greater complexity in the Community Nursing – Family Health Nursing Area.
- To integrate ethical, aesthetic, empirical, personal and emancipatory expertise and the skills that are the basis for clinical decision-making in the Community Nursing – Family Health Nursing Area.
- To advocate clinical decision-making in accordance with the most robust scientific evidence available to the Community Nursing – Family Health Nursing Area.
- To lead and cooperate in the provision and management of specialised interventions for the family and each one of its members in different contexts and life circumstance.
- To impart knowledge, reasoning and conclusions in the area of family health nursing to the family and to each one of its members throughout their lives.
- To participate autonomously in management in the Community Nursing – Family Health Nursing Area and in building a lifelong learning pathway.
Graduate profile
Masters in the Community Nursing – Family Health Nursing Area have a set of specific skills in the area (Community Nursing in the Area of Family Health Nursing) and skills common to specialised nursing in different areas. They are thus equipped to work in all contexts fostering fluent family processes and dynamics, particularly in situations of recognised complexity. Endowed with critical thinking, decision-making and clinical judgement abilities, they are also qualified to work in the area of research, management and organisation of nursing services and care.
Professional outcomes
The Master’s Degree offers a wide range of career prospects in the area of Family Health Nursing, at different levels of healthcare. It also stands out for the specific legal qualifications it offers for working professionally in Family Health Units.
