Goals
Aims
General objectives
- To produce professionals who can work in basic education, performing educational roles especially for children aged 0 to 12, mainly in non-school contexts (educational services, after-school care, toy libraries, etc.) and in school settings (supporting and assisting in curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities).
- To prepare graduates who meet the requirements to continue studies at the second cycle level (master’s degree), through which they can pursue teaching roles in the context of pre-school education and basic education (primary and lower middle school).
Specific objectives:
To prepare professionals who:
- a) Understand the intricacies of educational processes in general and specifically the processes of teaching and learning, while possessing a comprehensive and holistic view of Basic Education across its various dimensions (organisational, curricular, social, etc.).
- b) Understand the developmental journey of children aged 0 to 12, along with their life contexts, learning environments and socialisation processes.
- c) Demonstrate expertise in the scientific domains of teaching and its methodologies, along with a deep understanding of the wider field of education, essential for effective roles in basic education and for advancing to the second study cycle.
- d) Showcase the ability to develop educational activities tailored for children aged 0 to 12, respecting their individual needs and cultural differences.
- e) Have the ability to observe, interpret, assess and reflect on the diverse educational settings that encompass early childhood and basic education.
- f) Have an entrepreneurial spirit and are adept at fostering and building socio-educational projects, developing their work in the knowledge-based society.
- g) Guide their actions based on the ethical and professional principles inherent to educational practice.
Graduate profile
The training profile of graduates in basic education is clearly defined by Decree-Law No. 79/2014.
Therefore, the curriculum design of this degree is based on the following training components: teaching areas (Portuguese, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and History and Geography of Portugal, Arts and Crafts); general educational area; specific didactics; cultural, social and ethical areas; and introduction to professional practice.
Professional outcomes
- Graduates in Basic Education are equipped to undertake educational roles, especially for children aged 0 to 12 years, particularly in non-school settings (educational services, afterschool programmes, toy libraries, etc.) and in school contexts (supporting and collaborating in curricular activities, supplementary and extracurricular roles).
- By pursuing further studies in master’s degree courses that provide a professional teaching qualification, graduates in Basic Education can access the teaching profession at pre-school and basic education levels (primary and lower middle school).
Continuing Studies
According to the new Teacher Qualification regulations (Decree-Law No. 79/2014, of 14 May), the training of Early Childhood Educators and Primary School Teachers (all areas) and Middle School Teachers (Maths and Natural Sciences or Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal) will now proceed through two mandatory cycles:
- First cycle of studies corresponding to the Bachelor’s Degree Course in Primary Education, lasting three years (six semesters).
- Second cycle of studies (Master’s degree) which will confer professional qualifications for teaching, where each student will select their specialisation:
-
- Pre-School Education (three semesters).
- Primary School Education (three semesters).
- Pre-School Education and Primary School Education (four semesters).
- Primary School Teaching and teaching Maths and Natural Sciences in lower middle school (four semesters).
- Primary school teaching and teaching Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal in lower middle school (four semesters).

Partnerships and internships
Beyond the partnerships established in the scope of projects associated with the course, it is worth highlighting a wide range of partnership agreements with educational institutions that welcome and mentor the students of the course, particularly in the Curricular Units of Professional Practice Initiation (IPP). These partnerships expand opportunities for training within a professional practice setting.
In the course curriculum design, emphasis was placed on distributing the training in the IPP component across the three curricular years (IPP1, IPP2 and IPP3) and to consider formal educational contexts at the pre-school education level and in primary and lower middle school (IPP2 and IPP3), as well as a variety of non-formal educational contexts (IPP1).
