The Master’s Degree in Fitness Activities is in response to the increasing demand for specific and specialised training in this area. This course is aimed at filling the knowledge gaps felt by professionals and recent graduates, providing highly demanding and up-to-date technical, scientific and professional training.
The School of Sport and Leisure has qualified, dynamic, experienced and motivated teaching staff, as well as laboratories, gyms and ideal equipment for developing skills in the fitness area. In the second year of the master’s degree course, students may choose to do a professional internship in companies, to do a development project or to prepare an academic dissertation. Partners: Ginásios Solinca, Holmes Place, AXIS Viana, Foz Health Club, Cura Aquae – Termas de Melgaço, MelSport; Melgaço, Valença and Monção City Councils.

Entry Requirements
- In accordance with the Regulations on Study Cycles leading to a Master’s Degree at the Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo, the following may apply for the Master’s Degree Course in Fitness Activities:
- a) Holders of a bachelor’s degree or its legal equivalent in the academic area of Sports Science or in a similar academic area.
- b) Holders of a foreign higher education degree granted following a first study cycle organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State that is a signatory to this process in the academic area of sports science or in a similar academic area.
- c) Holders of a foreign higher education degree recognised by the Scientific and Technical Council at IPVC as meeting the aims of the bachelor’s degree in the academic area of the study cycle in question or in a similar academic area.
- d) Holders of academic, scientific or professional qualifications that are recognised as attesting to their ability to take on this study cycle by the IPVC Scientific and Technical Council.
- The recognition of the similarity of the academic area referred to in paragraphs (a), (b) and (c) of the previous point is granted by the Course Committee.
- The selection of candidates by the Scientific and Technical Committee will take the following general criteria into account:
- a) The candidate’s academic and scientific background, with particular relevance for holders of higher education qualifications (bachelor’s degree) in the area of fitness or exercise.
- b) The candidate’s professional background in sports science or similar areas, with particular relevance being given to proven professional experience in the area of fitness or exercise.

Aims
To promote fitness activities as powerful agents for promoting healthcare, performance, aesthetics and entertainment.
To develop the skills learnt in the previous training (bachelor’s degree) and professional experience (if applicable), broadening these in terms of specific skills in fitness activities, with a view to their autonomous and original application in a professional context.
Graduate profile
- Being able to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in specialised practical intervention, including assessment, planning, and management of professional fitness activities in various settings (gyms, sports clubs, local authorities, outdoor environments, private homes, online, etc.).
- Analysing the behaviour of people and communities, reflecting the solutions in fitness activity services (companies, public health bodies, etc).
- Leading and motivating people and communities to actively participate in fitness activities.
- Actively investing in lifelong learning through constant, autonomous updating of knowledge and the quest for knowledge.
